Clàudia Pérez Barrancos

Clàudia Pérez-Barrancos graduated in Marine Science and holds a Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Oceanography from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). Her master’s thesis on the response of phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria to dust deposition in the Mauritanian-Senegalese upwelling received the maximum qualification.

At present, Clàudia is a predoctoral researcher at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) in the Canary Islands. She obtained a research grant by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) as part of the POSEIDON project lead by Dr. Jesús M. Arrieta. Her research line focuses on the role of microbes in the storage of dissolved organic matter in the deep ocean, which is also related to larger climate processes. Clàudia is also very interested in the use of sequencing techniques and bioinformatics in marine microbial ecology. She is member of the Young Researcher Association of Tenerife where she organizes workshops and outreach activities aiming to raise awareness about the social importance of oceanography and takes any available opportunity to participate in science outreach.
