EUGENIO FRAILE NUEZ

Eugenio Fraile Nuez, nacido en Gran Canaria (España) en 1976, se graduó y se doctoró en Ciencias del Mar por la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Su doctorado obtuvo el premio extraordinario a la mejor tesis doctoral en el área de Ciencias Experimentales. A partir de 2009, ejerce como Investigador Científico en el Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO-CSIC) en el Centro Oceanográfico de Canarias, Tenerife. Actualmente, su investigación se centra en el estudio de los procesos físico-químicos asociados a volcanes submarinos y fuentes hidrotermales de canarias. Ha sido investigador principal de los proyectos Bimbache, Vulcano-I-II y Vulcana-I-II-III, y ha liderado los estudios oceanográficos realizados por el IEO-CSIC durante las dos últimas crisis sismo-volcánicas que afectaron al territorio español: El Hierro en 2011 y La Palma en 2021. A lo largo de su carrera investigadora, ha publicado más de 65 artículos científicos en revistas internacionales especializadas de alto índice de impacto. Ha participado en más de 30 proyectos de investigación nacionales e internacionales, así como en numerosas campañas oceanográficas, acumulando más de 2000 días de mar en diferentes buques de investigación nacionales e internacionales alrededor del mundo. Desde 2014 ejerce como Asesor del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Marítima del Gobierno de España en Riesgo Vulcanológico Submarino, así como en Oceanografía Física para el Plan Marítimo Nacional del Ministerio de Fomento. Además, es miembro del Plan de Emergencia por Riesgo Volcánico de Canarias (PEVOLCA) y asesor del IEO-CSIC en la Célula Nacional de Información y Análisis de Riesgos y Amenazas (CIARA) del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Marítima (CNSM) del Gobierno de España.

Eugenio Fraile Nuez, was born in Gran Canaria (Spain) in 1976, graduated with and PhD in Marine Sciences (Dr Physical Oceanography) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. His PhD obtained the extraordinary prize for the best doctoral thesis in the Experimental Sciences area. Since 2009 Dr Fraile is a Research at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) at the Oceanographic Center of the Canary Islands, Tenerife. His research on Climate Change focuses on the variability of the thermohaline properties, heat and mass transport of large-scale ocean processes. Dr. Fraile’s research has resulted in over 65 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, he has been involved in more than 30 national and international Research Projects and he has participated in numerous oceanographic cruises, accumulating over 2000 days at sea on different national and international research vessels around the world. He is currently the Physical Oceanography leader of the Circumnavigation project Malaspina 2010 and the IP of Bimbache, Vulcano I-II and Vulcana-I-II-III projects for the study of the variation of the physical-chemical, biological and geological properties of the submarine volcano of El Hierro Island. Recently, Dr Fraile has been named as Advisor for the National Maritime Security Council of the Spanish Government in Submarine Vulcanological Risk and Physical Oceanography Advisor for the National Maritime Plan from the Fomento Ministry. Dr Fraile is a member of the Emergency Plan of the Volcanic Risk at the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA) and also from the National Cell of Information and Hazard Analysis and Threats (CIARA) from the Spanish Government.
