Susannah Buchan

Dra. Susannah Buchan, es oceanógrafa británica, especializada en acústica submarina, y ecología y bioacústica de cetáceos. Se tituló en oceanografía en la National Oceanographic Center de la Universidad de Southampton, Reino Unido; obtuvo un Magister de la Universidad de St. Andrews, Escocia; y en 2015, su grado de Doctor en Oceanografía de la Universidad de Concepción, Chile. Hoy, es Profesora Visitante de la Universidad de Concepción, investigadora del Centro COPAS Sur-Austral y del Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Zonas Áridas, e investigadora invitada del Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, EE.UU. Su investigación se centra en entender los forzantes de la distribución de cetáceos usando la acústica pasiva, la acústica activa, y sensores oceanográficos, desde plataformas fijas y móviles (gliders). Susannah también trabaja en el desarrollo de técnicas analíticas de detección, clasificación y localización, y transmisión en tiempo real, para las señales de baja frecuencia, como vocalizaciones de ballenas, eventos sísmicos y fuentes antropogénicas (barcos). Susannah es parte del Comité Operativo sobre el Ruido Submarino del Ministerio del Medio Ambiente de Chile y del grupo de trabajo internacional Acoustic Trends Working Group del Southern Ocean Research Partnership. Ha publicado una quincena de publicaciones científicas; actualmente lidera cinco proyectos de investigación y participa en varios más, financiados por agencias chilenas e internacionales. Dr. Susannah Buchan is a British oceanographer, specializing in ocean acoustics, and cetacean ecology and bioacoustics. She carried out her undergraduate studies in oceanography at the National Oceanographic Center, Southampton, United Kingdom; obtained a Master’s degree from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland; and in 2015 obtained her PhD in oceanography from the University of Concepcion, Chile. Today, Susannah is Visiting Professor of the University of Concepcion, researcher at the COPAS Sur-Austral Center and the CEAZA Research Center, and Guest Investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA. Her research focuses on understanding the drivers of cetacean distribution using passive acoustics, active acoustics and oceanographic sensors, from fixed and mobile (gliders) platforms. Susannah also works on the development of analytical techniques of detection and classification, and real-time transmission, for low frequency signals, such as whale vocalizations, seismic events and anthropogenic sources (ships). Susannah is part of the Committee on Underwater Noise of the Ministry of the Environment of Chile, and the international Acoustic Trends Working Group of the Southern Ocean Research Partnership. Susannah has published over fifteen scientific articles, is PI of five research projects, and co-PI of several more, funded by Chilean and international agencies.
